Two police officers were hurt late Friday after they crashed into another vehicle while responding to a car chase that resulted in an exchange of gunfire in South Los Angeles.
Officers were in pursuit of a vehicle with an armed suspect near the Florence-Firestone neighborhood, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The chase came to an end near the intersection of Pace Avenue and E. 96th Street.
There, the vehicle’s four occupants got out of the SUV and at least one person shot at the officers, prompting them to fire back. No injuries occurred during the exchange of gunfire and two people were detained immediately.
The vehicle’s two other occupants ran from the scene but LAPD was able to apprehend them after setting a perimeter.
During the ordeal, other LAPD officers responding to the call for help crashed into another vehicle. Two officers were hurt in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It’s unclear what caused that crash.
LAPD did not release the names of the individuals who were arrested in the case. It’s unclear what charges they may face.
